WTF Is Vibe Coding, and Does Your Small Business Actually Need It?

Vibe coding is a way of building software by describing what you want in everyday language and letting an AI coding tool create the code. Instead of manually writing every line, you might say, “Build me a simple client intake dashboard with a form, status tracker, and automatic confirmation email.” The AI builds a version, you test it, and then you keep refining it through conversation.

In other words, it is prompting with consequences.

Computer scientist Andrej Karpathy introduced the term in 2025 to describe an especially loose version of AI-assisted coding, one where the human follows the flow, accepts changes quickly, and may stop paying close attention to the underlying code. Since then, the phrase has expanded into a catch-all for building websites, apps, automations, and internal tools by talking to AI.

And yes, the name is a little ridiculous. The shift behind it is not.

So, is vibe coding just another name for prompting?

Kind of. But the output is different.

A normal prompt might give you an email, a strategy, a spreadsheet formula, or a list of ideas. A vibe-coding prompt asks AI to create or change working software. The conversation can produce files, interfaces, databases, integrations, and automations that actually do things.

Here comes the part that the breathless social-media demos tend to skip.

Something can look polished, click correctly, and still be held together with digital duct tape. AI-generated software may contain security vulnerabilities, expose private data, mishandle logins, break when usage grows, or become difficult for a real developer to repair later.

Please do not hand a vibe-coded prototype your customers’ payment details, health information, passwords, confidential records, or the keys to your entire business because the buttons are cute.

The higher the risk, the more human technical review you need. If the tool handles sensitive information, money, customer accounts, legal obligations, critical operations, or a public-facing experience at scale, bring in a qualified developer before launch.

1. What specific problem am I solving?

2. Could an existing tool solve it more safely and cheaply?

If you cannot clearly answer those questions, do not start building yet. That is not a technology problem. That is a clarity problem wearing a trendy little hat.

A smarter way to experiment

Vibe coding works best when you treat AI like a very fast junior builder, not an all-knowing technology department.

• Start with one narrow job and a clearly defined user.

• Use fake or non-sensitive data while you experiment.

• Write down what success looks like before asking AI to build.

• Test every button, form, message, error, and edge case you can think of.

• Keep copies and version history so one enthusiastic prompt does not destroy a working version.

• Ask a qualified human to review anything important before it goes live.

That may sound less glamorous than “I built an app over lunch,” but functioning businesses require more than a good demo. They require systems you can trust.

Does your small business actually need vibe coding?

Maybe. You do not need it simply because the internet learned a new phrase.

You should explore it if you have a clear, contained problem; want to prototype an idea quickly; understand the limits; and are willing to test the result. You should pause if you are chasing the novelty, replacing proven systems without a business case, or planning to launch something critical without technical review.

The point is not to collect more shiny tools. The point is to build a business that runs more smoothly behind the scenes and gives you more room to lead.
